In connection with Laura Böök’s exhibition The group that can not sing at Celsius projects in Malmö (22-30 August), the artist presents her projects and artistic practice at Skånes konstförening.

Laura Böök’s artistic work moves between visual art and film. In her new video installation The group that cannot sing, she explores the relationship between documentary and staged images, the strangeness of ordinariness, and the fear of failure. The group that cannot sing is a popular singing course at Kalliola, a community college in Helsinki, which invites its participants to get to know their voice and discover the joy of singing. Laura participated in the group’s activities for one year, as an unskilled singer among others. It has been a way to deal with her own perfectionism as well as a chance to research different understandings of failure in our culture. With a background in documentary photography, it has also been important for her to rethink the ethics and power relations of portraiture and try to find a gaze that is both tender and direct. The piece is made in collaboration with sound designer Niklas Nybom.

Laura Böök (b. 1986) lives in Helsinki and works with photography, moving image and text. In her earlier works she has explored themes around identity, place and personal and collective memory. In 2020, she is graduating with a master’s degree in photography from Aalto University in Helsinki, where she has also studied documentary film. In 2014, she completed her BA in Documentary Photography from the University of South Wales. She has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad.
